In September 2023, Family House commenced its 40th year serving patients and families who must travel to Pittsburgh for critical, often life-sustaining medical care. What began as a small but compassionate enterprise quickly grew into an innovative, much-emulated model of family and patient support systems. We provide our guests with conveniences like private rooms for lodging, along with nourishing meals, free transportation to local hospitals, communal programs, and other supportive resources. Throughout the year, dozens of volunteer groups come to Family House to prepare and serve dinners for guests. Yes, all patients staying at Family House must have a caregiver who is a person age 18 or over. This person is solely responsible for the patient with whom they are staying. They must be emotionally and physically able to care for the patient and themselves, and they must be able to assist in possible decision-making. Multiple caregivers are permitted as long as there is not a lapse in patient support.

In July of 1981, the phone rang at the offices of the University Health Center of Pittsburgh (UHCP). Two adjacent homes on McKee Place, long occupied by fraternities, were for sale. On a hot, humid Pittsburgh day, Joel Ettinger, UHCP Executive Vice President, visited the houses. They were abandoned, in serious disrepair, and reeked of long-ignored trash. Unfortunately, many families arrive at Family House feeling anxious, desperate, frightened, and worried while facing a medical emergency in an unfamiliar city. While many of our patients and families are experiencing transplantation, surgery, and treatment for cancer and other serious illnesses, others have come to Pittsburgh unexpectedly due to traumatic accidents or an abruptly diagnosed emergency. These guests may arrive without the necessities of modern life, such as identification, checks, credit or debit cards, and often without even the most basic or appropriate clothing for weather conditions. They are exhausted and confused, facing days or months of medical treatment or long periods of sitting at a loved one’s bedside.

Family House Pittsburgh, an organization that serves patients and families staying in Pittsburgh for medical care each year, announced Wednesday it has bought the Courtyard by Marriott hotel located on Liberty Avenue in Bloomfield. To ensure the organization’s long-term sustainability, in 2015 Family House commenced a strategic business planning process to address rising operating costs and to ensure the organization’s long-term sustainability. Among the outcomes of the five-year planning process, cost-cutting measures were undertaken, including the closure of Family House McKee. Family House started as a single location, then expanded over time to include multiple facilities across the city to serve a growing base of patients and their families. We then consolidated to one, multi-functional location in July of 2022. Today, thanks to the generosity of donors and under the roof of one dedicated facility, Family House is a place where our guests are able to find the rest, comfort, and support that can positively impact their health journey.
By offering safe, convenient, affordable housing and a network of support, comfort, and compassion, Family House reduces emotional and financial stress for people dealing with medical crises in a city where they are strangers. Located within close proximity to area hospitals, Family House offers the comforts of home and convenience to loved ones at affordable rates. Whether here for cancer treatments, trauma care, or transplants, our services give families the peace-of-mind to focus on the care of those closest to them.
Accommodations and Services
Families and their loved ones facing life-threatening illnesses were welcomed to Family House by a crew of compassionate staff and volunteers to live and cook their own meals in specially designed shared kitchens and dining areas. All could recover and recuperate in comfortable surroundings for as little as $15 per night, or even less for those unable to pay. Every family became a member of all the families at Family House supported by staff and volunteers who saw their work not as a job but as deep, meaningful purpose. Within weeks of opening, the 39 rooms of Family House McKee were constantly filled, with an ever-growing waiting list. In 1985, Family House became a separate 501c3 charitable organization guided by a devoted Board of healthcare and community leaders, and hundreds of volunteers and staff. Among the handful of Family House founders was Howard “Hoddy” Hanna III.

Courtesy shuttles operate regularly throughout the day and evening. When you arrive at Family House, a staff member or volunteer will give you an updated shuttle schedule. Guests are welcome to request staff and volunteers wear a mask during their interactions. Those who are feeling ill or experiencing COVID-19 symptoms should mask while in public spaces. We also request they limit their time in public spaces, if feeling ill. This policy is subject to change based on the Allegheny County (PA) COVID-19 transmission rate. Patients who are seeking medical treatment at Pittsburgh area hospitals, as well as their family members and caregivers, are welcome to stay at Family House.

Family House does not provide medical assistance or home care services. Every patient must be accompanied by a caregiver, during their entire stay, to be eligible to stay at Family House.
